IMPLANT / DENTALVIEW GUIDE
Dental implant treatment: why three months for some and a year for others?
Implant surgery leaves two further stages: healing into bone and making the replacement tooth. Three months may refer to waiting after placement; a year may include extraction, additional surgery and the final restoration.
- Surgery is not the end of treatment. The implant heals into bone before the replacement tooth is made.
- Extraction healing also counts in the full course. Placement on the extraction day differs from placement after the socket heals.
- Grafting first adds a wait before placement. Its sequence differs from grafting during implant placement.
- A same-day temporary tooth is not the final tooth. Further appointments replace it with the final restoration.
If grafting comes first, the grafted site heals before implant placement. Small grafts may instead be done at placement. Whether these operations are combined or staged changes the schedule.
01.How long does dental implant treatment usually take?
After placement, the implant heals into bone before the tooth is made. This bone-to-fixture attachment is called osseointegration. Several appointments separate placement from fitting the final tooth.
Leeds describes healing after placement as generally two to six months. Guy’s and St Thomas’ describes an overall course of six to twelve months, including assessment and restoration. The first figure concerns healing; the second concerns the whole course.
| Period and source | Treatment stage |
|---|---|
| Generally 2–6 months / Leeds | Healing into bone after placement, followed by restoration work. |
| Usually at least 3 months / Guy’s and St Thomas’ | Waiting after placement before using the implant to support teeth. |
| Overall 6–12 months / Guy’s and St Thomas’ | Assessment, any necessary grafting, placement and restoration. |

A reviewer described a quick implant procedure
주변에서 임플란트 아프다고 해서 걱정 많았는데, 원장님 손도 빠르시고 생각보다 전혀 안 아프게 해주셔서 금방 끝났어요!English translation: People around me said implants hurt, so I was very worried, but the dentist worked quickly and it did not hurt at all as I had expected, so it was over quickly!
This reviewer described a quick procedure but did not give the final-tooth fitting date. The table also describes those UK hospitals, not an average for Korea.

02.Why do extraction or bone grafting make treatment longer?
If placement follows a wait after extraction, the extraction site must heal first. This schedule differs from immediate placement on the extraction day. When gum treatment comes first, examination determines the placement date.
A substantial bone shortage may require grafting and healing before placement. The fixture then needs time to heal into bone. When a small defect is grafted at placement, there is no separate pre-placement graft-healing wait.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ says grafting may extend treatment by four to six months. Before sinus surgery, ask whether the implant will be placed during that operation or separately later.

03.Does a same-day implant include the final tooth that day?
Placing a fixture that day differs from fitting the final tooth. A temporary tooth may be replaced later with the final restoration. Healing and fabrication remain, so receiving a temporary does not mean treatment is finished.
The final tooth is made after an impression or scan, then tried in and adjusted for shape and bite. For a front tooth, ask what temporary tooth will fill the gap and what eating restrictions apply.

04.My implant is already placed without a tooth. Is treatment late?
After placement, the implant may be left without a tooth while it heals into bone. Surface gum healing does not complete bone attachment. A fixture buried under the gum also needs its top exposed before restoration.

A review written during implant treatment
넘 마음에 들어서 임플란트 치료중이에요English translation: I like it so much that I am undergoing implant treatment.
This review was written during treatment and gives neither placement nor final-tooth dates. If a planned restoration visit is postponed, ask whether bone healing, tooth fabrication or appointment scheduling is the reason.

05.How should I plan several implants, a move or overseas travel?
Several implants do not mean multiplying the time for one implant by their number. Appointments depend on whether sites are treated together or in stages. Before a move or overseas travel, discuss the visits needed through restoration.
| Situation | Question for the clinic |
|---|---|
| Several implants or full-arch treatment | Will surgery be on one day or in stages? When are temporary and final teeth connected? |
| Concern about a front-tooth gap | What temporary tooth will I use? What food and care restrictions apply? |
| Moving or long-term overseas travel | What stage will be finished before departure? Who will handle later visits, and what records should I obtain? |
| A planned restoration date has changed | Is the reason healing, additional treatment, fabrication or scheduling? What will happen at the next visit? |
When changing clinics, obtain implant product information, images and treatment records. Discuss continuation with the receiving clinic before requesting the records.

Before your consultation
Questions about treatment duration
- Does the estimate start at extraction or implant placement?
- Are grafting and placement combined or separate?
- How long will I use a temporary tooth, and when is the final restoration fitted?
- What is checked before moving to the next stage?
- What could change the schedule, and how will I be contacted?
- How can treatment be staged around periods when I cannot attend?
Three things to remember
- Counting from extraction differs from counting from placement.
- Restoration appointments remain after healing into bone.
- Ask whether the next visit is an examination, an impression or final fitting.
FAQ
Dental implant treatment duration FAQ
Will an implant be finished in three months?
Even after three months of healing, fabrication may remain. The completion date depends on whether that visit fits the final tooth or begins impressions.

Does a year of implant treatment mean something is wrong?
Separate grafting and placement, or several restoration visits, extend the whole course. If it exceeds the original schedule, ask the treating clinic why.
Sources Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS, Dental implants: Overview / 2026-10-22
Does grafting always add a fixed number of months?
It depends on whether grafting accompanies placement. When grafting comes first, the site heals before implant placement.
Sources Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS, Dental Implants / Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS, Having a dental implant / 2026-10-22
Does a same-day implant include the final tooth that day?
Same-day fixture placement differs from fitting a final tooth. Treatment with a temporary tooth requires later visits for the final restoration.
Sources Gallucci et al., 2018 / PMID 30328194 / Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS, Dental Implants / 2026-10-22
Can reviews predict my own implant treatment time?
Do not apply another person’s timeline directly. A review without extraction, grafting and final-restoration details does not establish the full treatment duration.
Sources Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS, Dental Implants / 2026-10-22
What should I ask about finishing treatment sooner?
Ask whether extraction and placement can be combined and why separate surgery may be needed. The restoration date depends on bone-to-implant attachment.
Sources Gallucci et al., 2018 / PMID 30328194 / Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS, Having a dental implant / 2026-10-22
Ask both “When will the implant be placed?” and “When will the final tooth be fitted?” If grafting comes first, ask separately about the wait before placement.
